The FDA, the medical-safety watchdog of the pharmaceutical industry, says Viagra should be banned as a drug because it can cause heart attacks and strokes in people with heart disease or high blood pressure. The drug is also not approved for use in children as a drug for treating pulmonary arterial hypertension.
Viagra is marketed as a "little blue pill" that lasts for 4-5 hours and is available over the counter as a generic medication. However, the FDA says it has not received any reports of adverse events or deaths related to the drug. The agency says it has not received any reports of deaths from sildenafil related to this drug.

T-shirt-maker Viagra has been struggling with rising prescription prices since its initial pill was pulled from the market in April. And now, it's getting back to its normal price range, at the same level it had been in before the drug's maker, Pfizer, pulled the pills from the market.
The generic version of Viagra, the drug that Pfizer launched in 2003, costs $1.41 a pill. It's the latest competitor to Pfizer's brand-name drug, sildenafil citrate, which is the generic version of Viagra.

Pfizer is still trying to find a way to cut costs through other measures, he said. The company has been trying to work with drug makers to try to keep prices low but said the strategy hasn't worked, which isn't entirely accurate, he said.
"We've always been trying to be as conservative as possible in terms of going up or down from the average person to the average individual," said Zyprexa, who is a former director at Lilly's drug division.
But now, the drug has been struggling to keep its market share. The drug's maker, Eli Lilly & Co., has been raising prices even more, as its revenue has been hit by a generic version of its drug. And the company also is trying to get people to buy it.
"We are seeing a lot of people who are on Viagra who are in a lot of fear that they will go to hell," said Zyprexa, "and so we've got to be realistic in our attempts to reduce these costs."
But Pfizer said it is working with drug makers to try to lower prices and keep the average customer's health at a healthier level, by lowering the average monthly cost.
The company also is trying to keep some pharmacies open at all times. If it is successful, it would take about two years to complete the work that would have gone into keeping the prices low and keeping pharmacies open.
But the company said it has had to increase its efforts to cut costs, which are measures that Zyprexa said are part of its strategy to reduce the cost of prescription drugs.
"There are other strategies for lowering the cost of drugs like Viagra and Cialis, as well as other prescription drug programs," he said.
Pfizer said it is also trying to keep some pharmacies open at all times.
Last year, Pfizer said it has a program to try to lower its prescription drug bill through an online program that can also be purchased by consumers, which would require the company to make the program available to more than one million Americans.
"We believe that this program is great, but as you can see, it is a very different program from Pfizer's," said Zyprexa, who is a former director of Lilly's drug division.
Pfizer said that program was designed to help more than 1.4 million people who have high blood pressure, angina, heart disease, high blood pressure that is not controlled, or diabetes.
